COMMENTARY

Lyricist Jessie Villars contributed occasionally to songs for Broadway shows between 1891 and 1908. Tours followed closely the poetic meter of his text in composing the rhythm for his setting, which was created for insertion into a Christian liturgy for Easter morning services. The hymn-like characteristics of the song suggest that a four-part homophonic arrangement of the vocal line would also make an excellent choral anthem.
